The Biggest Bag Trends of NYFW Spring 2019

The New York Fashion Week runway shows for Spring 2019 served accessible street style. Most notable? The handbags, of course.
  • NYFW Spring 2019 delivered wearable, fashion-forward streetwear styles highlighting denim, logos, and luxe neutrals.
  • Fringe was a major trend, seen on Americana leather at Coach, luxurious suede at Michael Kors, and evening bags by 3.1 Phillip Lim.
  • Animal prints dominated runways, featuring zebra at Michael Kors, classic leopard at Calvin Klein, and crocodile skins at Tom Ford.
  • Mini bags remained strong, with Alexander Wang and Oscar de la Renta confirming the trend, while Marc Jacobs added oversized top handles.
  • Other functional trends included oversized carryalls by Proenza Schouler, chain straps by Kenzo, and crossbody bags worn high and tight.

The Biggest Bag Trends of NYFW Spring 2019

The Spring 2019 Ready-to-Wear collections have come and gone, making us dreamy with inspiration for a new season. Can we skip winter and get to the warm weather, already? The designers of New York Fashion Week always seem to understand the desire to incorporate new looks into our wardrobe now. Whereas the creations from Milan and Paris are more aspiration than inspiration, NYFW consistently provides decidedly wearable eye-candy. The latest New York Fashion Week runway shows served up streetwear styles that are accessible even today, on the precipice of winter, with lots of denim, logos, and luxe neutrals. Of course, there were a few fantastical moments–most notably at Rodarte and Marc Jacobs–but the majority of designers focused on fashion-forward function, especially when it came to bags.

For us (obviously), the accessories stole the shows. Here are our favorite bag trends from NYFW, along with shopping links to try the trends right this second.

Fringe

Perhaps the biggest runway trend at NYFW was fringe. Bags were accented with every type of tassel, from Americana leather (Coach) to luxurious suede (Michael Kors) and even evening-appropriate versions (3.1 Phillip Lim). Shop the look here.

Animal Prints and Skins

NYFW runways were wild with animal prints. Michael Kors favored a vacation-worthy zebra print, while Calvin Klein kept it classic with leopard. Tom Ford, in his signature high-end fashion, showed crocodile skins. Shop the look here.

Mini Bags

Small is going strong for Spring 2019. Mini bags have been big for a while now, and many NY-based designers, from Alexander Wang to Oscar de la Renta, made it clear that the trend is here to stay. Marc Jacobs updated the look by pairing mini bodies with oversized top handles. Shop the look here.

Oversized Bags

Of course, it’s all about balance. When a mini bag just won’t work for your day of meetings and errands, Proenza Schouler and Tom Ford have the perfect solution: the oversized bag. This quirky–but majorly functional–look is one of our favorites for the new season. Shop the look here.

Chain Straps

There’s no wrong way to wear a chain strap. 3.1 Phillip Lim gave the look a modern update with a large, circular loop, and Calvin Klein got in on the look as well. Alexander Wang and Kenzo also gave chain straps their cool stamp of approval. Shop the look.

Backpacks

The fashion-meets-function charm of a good backpack can’t be beat–at least, according to designers like Michael Kors and Jeremy Scott. Shop backpacks here.

The New Crossbody

Crossbody bags aren’t going anywhere either–but there’s a new way to wear them. Sally LaPointe presented small crossbody bags worn high and tight around the chest, while Gabriela Hearst styled them as necklaces. Shop crossbody bags here.
